Our Staff and Experience

Alex is a seasoned ecologist with two degrees and five years experience in the industry. As a qualified supervisor he enjoys helping clients manage ecological risk at the time of works and has done so over a huge number and variety of projects as ECoW, but he also has a background in species-specific ecology surveys, sampling, GIS, and a useful variety of specialist activities including translocation, tree climbing and vegetation removal.

Ruby May Douglas, Director / Assistant Ecologist

Ruby has been an ecologist for two years, having previously worked in meadow management and conservation. With robust background knowledge of plants, the habitats they form and the fauna within them, she provides invaluable support on the ground for all kinds of surveying, equipment deployment, sampling and mapping on a variety of projects. Ruby is also a certified tree climber, and conducts bird ringing with the BTO.

Throughout much of the 2025 ecology season Speedwell Ecology LTD has provided a great deal of boots-on-the-ground support to local consultancies. The 550+ hours of works have included fully conducting and leading soil sampling, water sampling, remote equipment deployment, bat activity, bird and reptile surveys. Though maintaining smooth workflow during peak season can be challenging, where reports were required we still managed to produce 100% of them same day.

This job, undertaken for a local consultancy involved both ecology surveys and specialist services comprising an all-in-one package to maximise efficiency. A vegetated courtyard that needed to be cleared was checked for nests and other ecological constraints, before our in-house supervision and devegetation services were used to safely complete the job in only a couple of hours. Being able to check for nests and remove vegetation (where nests are not present) in the same visit decreases costs and can save a great deal of time!

Due to the nature of the ecology business we often spend long hours in the field, and to ensure works are completed in a timely manner for clients we need to push some things back - unfortunately this includes updating our website! Hopefully this is testament to our honesty and duty to the client.
